Abstract
Inspired by the recent book of Emanuela Casti, the article develops some methodological reflections on the attitudes that should characterise the approach of a serious research in geography. From the ethical value of the work of a researcher to the perception of their role, come identified some best practices that provide important methodological guidance. In the margins it critically analyses the proposals contained in the book, aimed at overcoming the rationalist approach and founding one post-topographic, able to express cultural values and the social sense of place. The article concludes with a reflection on the requirement for the universal legibility of the map, and on the relationship between the subject and object of representation, that current trends are rapidly transforming. This last theme covers both the ethical and epistemological dimension of geographical research.
