Abstract
This paper aims to explore the existence of a dialogue with Surrealism in Raffaele Carrieri’s critical path, from the seminal period of the 1930s to the post-World War II years, when he was committed with supporting artists working under the banner of the ‘fantastic’. Carrieri’s contribution is investigated in light of the network of relationships, influences and contexts in which the author worked, amidst shifts and changes in perspective. The main sources of the research include his collaborations with magazines, with particular attention to the forms of the critical production and the importance given to the use and manipulation of images. In this regard, a specific focus is dedicated to Fantasia degli italiani (Fantasy of the Italians), a pivotal volume published by «Domus» editions in 1939, sort of laboratory of Carrieri’s imagery.
