Abstract

The revival of figuration in Italy took place after the crisis of Informalism, characterized by a flourishing of exhibitions and the development of experimental mouvements. In this context art critics such as Enrico Crispolti or Luigi Carluccio, for example, stressed the importance of Surrealism through their writings and their activity in organizing exhibitions. On one hand, the interest in Surrealism meant the support for that wing of Italian art which from the exhaustion of the experience of the Informel moved toward a return to the painted image, far from the production of the Neo-avant-gardes of the 1960s and early 1970s; on the other, it triggered critical interests that prompted new insights on key figures of Italian Twentieth Century art, such as Alberto Savinio or Giorgio de Chirico.
