Abstract
Through new documentary evidence, this essay analyses the assumptions, the outcomes and the early historiographical misfortune of the First Exhibition of Italian Surrealism held in Rome in February 1957 at the Circolo della Stampa Romana. The exhibition – largely conceived by Italo Cremona – brought together some figurative painters tending towards “fantastic art” – mostly coming from the galleries L’Obelisco and del Naviglio – alongside masters and “precursors” of “Italian Surrealism” such as Alberto Savinio, Alberto Martini, Arturo Nathan and Cesare Sofianopulo.
