In Memory of Pietro Greco

2020-12-23

Friday, December 18, 2020, Pietro Greco, 65, suddenly passed away.

Chemist and historian of science, internationally renowned expert in science communication, Greco dedicated his entire life to his work. Prolific and courageous journalist, he was the author of numerous essays, television and radio broadcasts.

He was co-editor of "La Scienza in rete" and among the founders of the City of Science in Naples and the Master in Science Communication in Trieste.

Pietro Greco was a master for all those involved in communication and popularization. His intense activity pushed us to reconsider not only the concept of scientific divulgation, but the articulation of the concept of Science itself towards a more ambitious concept, a Science not only more open but publicly engaged. A concept that should pass through the reconsideration of the involvement of the public, not conventionally, but as an active part involved in a wider debate. A debate on the public value of Science itself.

Pietro Greco signed the editorial of the second issue of our journal (https://riviste.fupress.net/index.php/subs/article/view/22/24) in which, speculating about the paradoxical pressure of the bibliometric method on the evaluation of the quality of science, he asked himself, together with the physicist Reinhard Werner: How do you recognize a good scientist?

It is not easy to find a satisfactory answer to this difficult question.

Thanks to his teachings we are sure we will be able to recognize a good science communicator.

Thanks Pietro.
