Abstract

The article investigates the matter of the function of the so-called ‘crypt’ of the Duomo of Siena through a new analysis of the sequence of Old and New Testament episodes. New possible iconographic identifications are advanced for both some surviving episodes and lost scenes thanks to comparisons with other pictorial cycles and the Maestà by Duccio di Buoninsegna. The reconstruction of the potential narrative patterns of the two cycles helps to analyse in depth the matter of the original presence of an altar, as well as the general organisation of the space, with a constant attention to the paintings and the architectural structure.
