Abstract
The pre-Columbian Mazzei collection is often cited as one of the most important in the Florentine Museum. However, the figure of Ernesto Mazzei is little known. With this study we outline a brilliant, complex personality, active in apparently separate cultural spheres. He was the protagonist of an adventurous life divided between Italy and distant countries of South America.
