Abstract

This article offers a critical analysis of the literature on papier-mâché sculpture in southern Italy between the 18th and early 20th centuries, a subject that has only recently been the focus of specific attention. It then suggests some possible directions for further research, focusing on the region of Basilicata, which has been the subject of even fewer studies. It also points out some unpublished or little-known papier-mâché sculptures in the Lucanian area, proposing attributions or specifying the context in which they were created.
