Abstract
Through an analysis of documentary sources and architectural evidence, this study aims to identify the location of the ancient chapel of the cemetery of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena. Decorated in 1341 by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, the chapel was later associated with the cult of the martyr Christina following the donation of relics from Constantinople to the Hospital in 1359. It is specifically hypothesised that the chapel corresponds, at least in part, to a space now integrated into the headquarters of the confraternity of Santa Caterina della Notte – within the area of the Hospital referred to as the “magazzini della corticella” –, which today presents a late 19th-century configuration.
