Abstract
An asteroid strike, a connectome father, and contagious memories. These are but some of the fantastical elements found in Elisa de Gortari’s 2024 Todo lo que amamos y lo que dejamos atrás. In a post-apocalyptic, steampunkish world, many of humanity’s technological advancements have been erased. Accompanied by her stepson Indiana, Grijalva is a reporter investigating a strange disease plaguing migrant children. Thus, like other speculative fiction from Latin America, Gortari’s novel is both dystopic and ecocritical: more significantly, it also offers a rigorous exploration of humanity’s limits. This article argues that Gortari’s novel can best be characterized as an example of hopepunk, literary neologism coined by Alexandra Rowland to describe fiction’s indefatigable ability to confront our contemporary dystopian reality.
