Abstract

The essay intends to make a scientific contribution to research on the surrealist avant-garde and its success in the field of exchanges between Italy and France after the Second World War. It aims to offer, in particular, a survey of the theoretical-formal debate that has arisen around the magazines «I 4 Soli», «Direzioni», «Evento», and «Il Gesto», in relation to their connections with the cahiers «Phases» and its surroundings. Methodologically, the contribution is based on a critical and comparative analysis of textual and visual sources, both published and unpublished, focused on the exchanges and editorial activities of the periodicals mentioned. These magazines served as information platforms and forums for artistic and poetic research during this transformative period. The essay will focus on several central themes of the debate between the 1950s and 1960s related to the art informel crisis, the expansion of new and multiform meanings of Surrealism, the re-evaluation of critical thought regarding the avant-garde – particularly Surrealism – and the evolving concept of what constitutes an ‘avant-garde magazine’.
