Abstract

The paper presents a group of drawings by Roberto Segoni for the design of a recreational centre in Compiobbi, preserved in the drawings collection of the Department of Architecture of the University of Florence and related to the exercises carried out within the Second Course of “Elements of Architecture and Survey of Monuments II”, taught by Italo Gamberini during the academic year 1963-64. The drawings document the process of approaching the project through a method based on the graphic analysis of the site, the reading of existing structures and the interpretation of environmental signs. In continuity with Gamberini’s teaching approach, drawing is not understood as a mere representation of data, but as a cognitive and design tool, capable of transforming lines, masses, volumes, surfaces and relationships with the context into generative elements of architectural form. The analysis of these materials thus highlights the transition from the visualisation of data to the construction of the project, up to the definition of the volumes, spatial relationships and materials of the building.
