Abstract

Building on a work by Giulio Paolini, an art action conceived by Fabio Sargentini, an installation by Renato Mambor, and a work by Jannis Kounellis – all realized between 1967 and 1970 and all referencing paintings by René Magritte exhibited in Italy – the paper analyzes the Italian processes of reactivation and resemantization of the artist’s work between the 1960s and 1970s. Interweaving critical debate, artistic production, and the artist’s Italian market, the paper clarifies how the image of Magritte as a forerunner of Pop Art aligned with bourgeois taste, typical of the 1960s, gradually gave way to a more subtle reading, focused on the analytical and metalinguistic value of his works, consistent with the international critical debate.
